Ah, the Bristol Balloon Fiesta! I didn't actually know it was a thing until my third year in Bristol... Being a student, I normally left Bristol for the summer; leaving in June after exams and returning in September for the new term. It wasn't until 2009 when I started my placement year, that I spent my first Summer in Bristol. Up until this point, I didn't actually really like Bristol.. (I know right?!) But that summer was when I saw it in a completely different light (and probably literally more daylight than my first 2 years as a nocturnal student!). We went to the nightglow and watched the evening ascent in Ashton Court and I was mesmerised. Today, the balloon fiesta is something we try not to miss during the summer holidays. We spent the weekend carefully watching wind patterns on the weather apps to plan if and where to watch the balloons, setting alarm clocks and sitting up on Purdown watching them glide overhead. There's nothing quite like it.
This is a print from an original mixed media piece, depicting the morning ascent at Ashton Court. It has lots of yellow, blues, and bright accents of red, in washes of watercolour and of pencil. It goes great with the rest of my 'half a lifetime' collection.
